Presented by DOPE SWAN, for colored girls: an abbreviated reading & colored girls speak was a reading and discussion panel that used Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf as a tool to address body image and self-esteem for young women, ages 10-18, in Brooklyn, New York. The production included a post-show dialogue with Sheron “Umi” Smith (author, educator and manager to hip-hop artist Mos Def), Julia Chance (journalist), Kevicha Echols (educator, psychologist) and Roopa Singh (educator, lawyer, journalist and poet). Starring Almitra Gasper, Jam Seifullah, Karyn Rose Bruyning, Alicia Boone, Pamela Jackson, Mary Pryor and Arin Maya Lawrence as the seven women of color, the production was directed by Sallome Hralima and featured a closing monologue read by 14-year-old Nyree Murray. Brittany Luse rounded out the crew as production assistant.
